早乙女乱馬 || Ranma Saotome

The sole heir to the Saotome School of Anything-Goes Martial Arts, Ranma is arrogant, egotistic, stingy, stubborn, and, to some degree, manipulative. He’s a real man among men and proud of it! However, due to an unfortunate training accident, Ranma’s body is cursed. Whenever he’s splashed with cold water, he turns into a voluptuous, red-headed, female version of himself. But that doesn’t stop him. He’s shameless, not beyond using his good looks (he knows he’s hot, when he’s both male and female) to achieve his goals; ie. distracting an opponent, getting free food, etc etc. He’s not ashamed of his looks at all, and depending on who he’s dealing with and the situation he’s in, he’s gotten comfortable with revealing the secret of his gender switching curse for as long as he’s not teased about it. And by the end of the series, everyone that matters to him already knows anyway. Since he is a boy, he still has a lot of boy habits; whatever gender he is at any given time, he’s perfectly comfortable with walking around in just his boxers. The fact that this bothers the people who surround him is more amusing to him than anything else.

In school, he’s not very bright and could honestly care less for higher education. His grades probably average to a B- at his absolute best, and that usually means getting homework help from Akane. The only learning he likes has to do with martial arts, where he truly does excel. He’s taken lessons from just about every martial arts school that could possibly be conceived; the weirder among them being Martial Arts Rhythmic Gymnastics, Martial Arts Tea Ceremony, Martial Arts Calligraphy, Martial Arts Dining, and many MANY more. And needless to say, he’s good. No – he’s really REALLY good. Certainly good enough to make him extremely overconfident in himself and his abilities. But that also means that Ranma is fiercely competitive. He hates to lose. In fact, the mere IDEA of losing to someone more than once seriously irks him beyond all reason, and he’ll do absolutely anything to beat them back at least twice as hard, sometimes even if that means he has to cheat. Cheating is usually a last resort, though; Ranma considers himself an honorable warrior and will usually go into a battle playing fair, especially when he feels they’re a worthy opponent. As a young child, Genma exposed him to a method of training that was completely unorthodox, and ultimately landed him with an irrational phobia of cats. If anything that meows comes anywhere near him, he immediately freaks and is not above hiding behind people nearby or under the bedsheets, whimpering and sobbing to himself. This would be his one weakness... to a certain point, anyway.

Rather ironically, Ranma loathes perverts. This probably stems from the fact that he’s the only person in the world who knows how it feels on both sides. And while he’s more than willing to use this knowledge to his advantage, that doesn’t change the fact that he feels all perverts and peeping toms should be beaten and humiliated horribly; Happosai and Kuno are both considered Unwanted Pervert #1. However much Ranma uses his girl-form to manipulate boys into getting what he wants, he’s still very much into girls. He has a very strong heterosexual male identity, which also makes him a lesbian that just likes to rake in the benefits off of unsuspecting men. The only naked female form he can really look at without getting embarrassed is his own, and any guy who hits on him of their own volition (ie., it doesn’t look like he’s gonna be getting anything out of it) is usually promptly beaten. This is especially true of upperclassman Kuno, whose unwanted affections give him the worst nightmares ever, and Happosai, whose perversion knows no bounds.

Usually, though, he really is a good person. On a good day he’s cheerful, friendly, laidback, and always willing to help those in need. While he gets upset fairly easily, openly beats on his own father, flails and yells a lot, and pretty much just fights all the time, he really does care. They may be his rivals, and he may tease/torment most of them an awful lot, but he sees them as his closest friends, too. He even cares very deeply for his family (however irresponsible that father of his may be), and is more than willing to lay his life on the line to protect them. That especially extends to his mother, even though she still has no idea who he is by the end of the anime. He values these people very much, even if he really doesn’t show it very often.

On that note, although Ranma will probably never admit it, he has... very strong feelings for his original fiancée, Akane Tendo. As such, he gets extremely jealous when it looks like someone is trying to woo her. But he's easy to embarrass, which makes him easy to manipulate for anyone who learns this about him, and he'd sooner kill himself before admitting his feelings for Akane to anybody (including himself, really) before he was ready to. He’s not emotionally ready to take on an intimate relationship, much less get married, so any form of intimacy or romance both terrify and fluster him. That said, Ranma has three legitimate fiancées. While he doesn’t love the other two, he needs to feel wanted, manly, and attractive, so he can’t bear the thought of them simply losing interest in him for no good reason. This is pretty much the only reason he keeps them around, though all things considered he does treat them pretty poorly. Should something happen that does seemingly make them fall out of love with him, if he doesn’t understand it Ranma will go out of his way to make them fall for him all over again.

As the heir to an entire branch of martial arts – one that’s extremely varied, no less – Ranma is something of a martial arts MASTER. When it comes to fighting, he’s a natural and can pick up on most techniques after seeing it used just a few times and practicing it for little more than a week or two (sometimes even within a matter of hours or days). There are probably very few people (assuming they’re proper human martial artists) in the world who actually stand a chance against him in a fight; That’s not an exaggeration. He can utilize any sort of weapon – or rather, in his hands, anything can be a weapon: from umbrellas to hula hoops, food to swords, brushes to napkins… literally anything. Since he’s pretty much been training in every kind of martial arts form he’s come across throughout his entire life, Ranma is very strong and very fast. In canon he’s shown lifting several tons worth of rocks, ice, and cement blocks, as well as throwing punches that easily broke through stone. As such, his body is also extremely durable. He’s survived hits of every kind, from getting kicked into orbit and landing on the top of his head to breaking damn near every bone in his body, and lived to tell the tale each time.

He has a huge arsenal of martial arts techniques from various schools of thought. He’s incredibly adaptable and will often improve himself in the middle of a fight. He knows what he’s doing, and has combined the techniques he’s learned on a whim on more than one occasion. His attacks range from ki-blasts, to super fast punches, to lightning quick eating, and much more. Ranma is also a master of the dreaded Cat-Fu, during which he is nigh unstoppable until he is snapped out of his trance. However, it only activates when overwhelmed by his fear of cats. He doesn’t remember anything that happens while in Cat-Fu mode.

Due simply to biological difference between men and women, female!Ranma’s reach isn’t as long and her strength is considerably weakened, but her lighter body means lots of speed. In canon, she’s been shown to be at least fast enough to run on water. That’s not taking into consideration the rest of her body’s mobility, particularly her hands and arms. Even in male form, he’s canonly thrown hundreds of punches fast enough to look like just one, so it stands to reason that as a female he’d be even faster.
